Cooking

Simple, sturdy and made to work outdoors. In Gällivare, people often cook outside. Not because it's advanced, but because it's practical. You're already outside. You're hungry. Then you cook there. It doesn't have to be more complicated than that.

What is Arctic cooking?

Arctic cooking is about cooking in nature, taking advantage of the cold, the wind and the changing weather.

That means:

  • Simple methods
  • Few tools
  • Ingredients that last
  • Food that fills you up

It should be quick to get something warm.
And it should work regardless of the season.

Common ways to cook outdoors

There are some methods that are used more than others in Gällivare.

Open fire - the classic

You cook directly over the fire or on embers. Works for everything from coffee to frying and simple cooking.

Good when:

  • You want to take it easy
  • You have time
  • It is allowed to fire

Portable camping stove

Simple and reliable. You get control over the heat, and it works even when it's windy. Perfect for boiling water, making soup or heating food.

Good when:

  • You want something quick
  • The weather is bad
  • You want to keep it simple

Griddle or Muurikka

Common for longer stops. You cook food directly on a plate over fire or gas. Good for fish, meat or simpler dishes.

Good when:

  • There are several of you
  • You want to cook a little more “real” food

Grill grate over fire

A simple solution. Place a grate over the fire and cook the food there. Works most of the time.

What do you cook?

It's usually simple.

  • Fish you caught yourself
  • Sausages or meat
  • Soups and freeze-dried food
  • Sandwiches and simple side dishes

The important thing is that it goes quickly and fills you up well.

Adapt to the season

Cooking outside in Gällivare looks different depending on the season.

Summer
Easy to make a fire. Plenty of time. Lighter equipment.

Autumn
A little colder, hot food becomes more important.

Winter
Everything takes longer. Fuel, planning and hot drinks are more important.

Spring-winter
Perfect for longer breaks out in the sun, but still cold in the air.

Boiled coffee

A break that belongs. In Gällivare, coffee is a natural part of being outdoors. Whether you're fishing, hiking or just taking a walk in the forest, sooner or later it's coffee.
